You asked for opinions in your opening post. Good luck, because down this road, you are going to need it. In order to use standard equipment, knockoffs are going to need to fit those dimensions. You need to be very careful when selecting any knock off product to make sure it is going to fit the brood chamber boxes.įor your reference, the standard 10 Langstroth hive box is 19 ⅞" X 16 ¼" (505mm x 413mm) and the standard 8 frame Langstroth hive box is 19 ⅞" X 13 ¾" (505mm x 350mm). Since genuine flow hive boxes are a non-standard width the flow hive company does sell matching brood chamber boxes. Flow frames and knock off frames are used only in supers. With flow hive and knock offs, you still use standard frames and equipment for the brood chambers. Where there is little regard for patents, there is also little regard for honest reviews and quality manufacturing. Some of the reviews are fake reviews from the manufacturer. Also, I'd be super skeptical of the reviews on the seller's websites, since most of them are Chinese made. You are probably not going to find many people with experience with the knockoffs. They are intersting, but I find that they have some minor quirks that I do not have to deal with on Langstroths, nothing major though.Ĭheck out r/Warre as well, its a small sub but it has some helpful links. My wife prefers the Warrés, but that is because she thinks they are cuter than the Langstroths. I was hooked, been playing with Warrés and Langstroths side by side ever since. That night I assembled the Warré and shook the bees in the next morning. They had brought back a trailer full of packages from California and after filling all his gear he had a few packages left over. I even cutout all the parts for a Warré hive, but then it sat unassembled gathering dust on the shelf for a few years. After you have a couple of years of experience then venture into a Warré. In saying that I am not referring to flow frames (do them or don't do them, they are a harvest tool, not a beekeeping philosophy). Subreddit header image and logo created by /u/ShotInTheActĪs a Warré enthusiast myself, my suggestion is to keep the Warré in your area of interest for a couple of years, but start with something that is more standard.
